Misfire jobs are bread-and-butter mobile work: small parts, no lift, finished in the driveway. They’re also where flat-rate guesses lose money, because a four-cylinder with coil-on-plug takes minutes while a transverse V6’s rear bank can take hours. Here’s what the market charges, and how to quote so the hard ones pay.

2026 national price ranges

From RepairPal’s national estimates (updated Sept. 3, 2026; exclude taxes and fees; not adjusted for location):

JobTotalLaborPartsSource
Spark plug replacement$288–$399$184–$270$104–$129RepairPal
Ignition coil replacement$238–$320$74–$109$164–$211RepairPal

Notice the split. Spark plugs are mostly labor, so the price depends on access. A single coil is mostly parts, and the labor is small, unless the coil sits under the intake. RepairPal notes that on some vehicles, reaching the rear coils means removing other components, even engine mounts.

Quote by access, not by job name

Quote = book time for this engine × your labor rate + parts × (1 + markup) + any trip fee

Diagnose before you sell parts

A misfire code says which cylinder, not which part. Before quoting, swap the coil to another cylinder and see if the misfire follows it, check fuel trims, and look for oil or coolant in the plug wells. A capable scan tool that shows misfire counts per cylinder makes this fast. If the testing takes real time, charge for it: see how to set a diagnostic fee.

Persistent misfires can damage the catalytic converter, which is a much bigger bill. Mention it when a customer wants to put off the repair. See catalytic converter replacement rules and pricing.

Example quote

Your book time is 1.4 hours for plugs on a given V6, your rate from the calculator is $95, and plugs cost you $60 at a 40% markup:

That’s a little below RepairPal’s national range for plugs. That’s fine if your costs support it. If your break-even rate from the calculator is higher than $95, raise the rate, don’t cut the time.
