Best Software for a Mobile Mechanic: Jobber vs Housecall Pro vs Shop Management Software
Updated 2026-10-17. Sources are listed at the end.
A mobile mechanic needs two kinds of software. One is field-service software: scheduling, routing, quotes, invoices and payments for a business that drives to the customer. The other is auto-repair shop software: VIN decoding, labor guides, parts ordering and digital inspections. Jobber and Housecall Pro are the first kind. Shopmonkey, Tekmetric and AutoLeap are the second. Here’s how to decide, using the vendors’ own published pricing (checked October 2026; prices change, so confirm before you buy).
Field-service apps: Jobber and Housecall Pro
Jobber
Jobber’s pricing page lists three single-user plans:
| Plan (1 user) | Monthly, no commitment | With 1-year commitment | Billed annually |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | $49/mo | $39/mo | $29/mo |
| Connect | $139/mo | $119/mo | $99/mo |
| Grow | $199/mo | $169/mo | $149/mo |
Extra users are listed at $29/month each, and Jobber also sells team versions that include 5 users. Jobber targets home and field service businesses: you get quotes, scheduling, invoicing, online payments and a client hub, but no VIN decoder or auto labor guide. Try Jobber.
Housecall Pro
Housecall Pro’s pricing page lists:
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed annually |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $79/mo | $59/mo |
| Essentials | $189/mo | $149/mo |
| MAX | $329/mo | $299/mo |
It advertises no long-term contract and card processing rates “as low as 2.59%.” Its marketing is aimed at home services (HVAC, plumbing, electrical and similar trades), so again expect strong dispatch and payments, but nothing auto-specific. Try Housecall Pro.
Auto-specific shop software
Shop management systems are built around the vehicle: customer and VIN history, labor times, parts quoting, and digital vehicle inspections with photos. Several vendors also sell to mobile operators. We compared their published plans in Shop Management Software Pricing 2026. Options: Shopmonkey, Tekmetric and AutoLeap.
How to choose
| If you… | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| Are solo, mostly do maintenance and simple repairs, and want the cheapest way to quote, schedule and get paid | A field-service app’s entry plan (Jobber Core, Housecall Pro Basic) |
| Live by labor times and parts quotes, and customers expect inspection reports with photos | Auto shop software |
| Run 2+ vans and need dispatch and routing | Compare a field-service app’s mid tier against shop software’s multi-user pricing |
| Bill fleets on net terms | Whichever has the invoicing and statements your fleet customers ask for |
Questions to ask in every demo:
- Total monthly cost at your real user count, including add-ons and payment processing.
- Commitment: is the advertised price annual-only? (Both vendors above show lower annual prices.)
- Data export: can you export customers, vehicles and invoices if you leave?
- Accounting sync: does it sync with QuickBooks?
- Offline use in driveways and parking lots with weak signal.
Don’t pay for what free tools already do
If you only need a professional estimate or invoice now and then, start with the free estimate & invoice generator and the labor quote calculator, then add a subscription when scheduling becomes the bottleneck. Your diagnostic tool is a separate purchase; compare scan tools at ScanToolMatch. Software is overhead, so add the monthly cost to your labor-rate math.
Software pays off most when it automates the two things that grow a mobile business: review requests and per-unit service records for fleet accounts. Set up per-line tax rules too; see sales tax on labor vs parts.
