A timing belt is one of the highest-labor jobs a mobile mechanic can do in a driveway, and one of the easiest to underprice. On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt, which raises the pricing question: one job or two?

2026 national price ranges

From RepairPal’s national estimates (updated Sept. 3, 2026; exclude taxes and fees):

JobTotalLaborPartsSource
Timing belt replacement$918–$1,338$603–$885$315–$453RepairPal
Water pump replacement$891–$1,135$366–$536$525–$598RepairPal

The timing belt is mostly labor: getting to the belt is the job. RepairPal notes that when the water pump is driven by the timing belt, replacing both at the same time is customary, and it suggests replacing the thermostat along with the water pump.

Don’t charge the overlap twice

If the pump sits behind the belt, most of the labor is shared. Adding the full labor for both jobs bills the teardown twice, and a customer who gets a second quote will notice.

Combined quote = belt job labor + only the additional pump labor + belt kit + pump + thermostat/coolant + markup

Your labor guide will usually show the pump as an add-on time when the belt is already off. Use that, not the standalone pump time.

Example (illustrative numbers; use your own guide times and costs):

Run your own rate through the labor rate & break-even calculator. On a job this long, an underpriced rate costs you hours, not minutes.
