First Tools to Buy as a Mobile Mechanic: Buy for the Jobs You'll Sell First
Updated 2026-10-17. Sources are listed at the end.
Most “mobile mechanic tool list” posts are shopping lists. A better question for a new business is which tools let you sell which jobs, and what those jobs pay. Buy in that order and every tool starts earning before the next purchase.
The labor figures below are 2026 national ranges from RepairPal (updated Sept. 3, 2026), collected in our mobile mechanic price list. They show the labor share of each job, which is what your tools let you earn.
Tier 1: the jobs most mobile techs start with
| Job | National labor range | Tools it needs (beyond basic hand tools) |
|---|---|---|
| Oil change | $58-$86 | Drain pan and sealed used-oil container, filter wrenches, funnel, lifting gear or ramps |
| Brake pads | $122-$179 | Floor jack + rated stands, breaker bar or impact, torque wrench, caliper piston tool, brake cleaner |
| Battery replacement | $61-$90 | Battery/charging-system tester, terminal tools, jump pack |
| Spark plugs | $184-$270 | Spark plug sockets and extensions, torque wrench, dielectric grease |
| Check-engine diagnosis | $125-$183 (all labor) | Scan tool that covers your local makes, digital multimeter |
Why these first:
- Lifting gear and a torque wrench come up in almost every row. Buy them first and buy them well. See jacks and jack stands for mobile mechanics for the ASME PASE standard and the recall history that shows why.
- A scan tool turns “no-start” and “check engine” calls into paid diagnostic jobs instead of guesses. Which tool depends on the makes you see and the functions you need. ScanToolMatch (sister site) compares coverage by job. Charge for the diagnosis: setting a diagnostic fee.
- Oil changes come with waste. Plan containers and a used-oil collection point before your first job: mobile oil change pricing & used oil rules.
Tier 2: add when the calls come in
| Job | National labor range | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Alternator / starter | $196-$288 / $191-$280 | Belt tools, longer extensions, electrical testing |
| Wheel bearing / CV axle | $226-$331 (bearing) | Axle nut sockets. Press-in bearings need a press or a shop. See bearing & axle pricing |
| Struts | $332-$487 | Spring compressor (also covered by ASME PASE), or quote complete struts. See strut pricing |
| A/C recharge | $179-$262 | EPA Section 609 certification plus recovery equipment. Required for A/C work for pay. See 609 certification |
Tier 3: software and access
Late-model diagnosis, programming and security work often needs OEM service information and a J2534 pass-thru device. Many makers sell short-term subscriptions, so you can buy access per job instead of yearly. See OEM service information access.
Paying for it
- Write off small tools now: under the de minimis safe harbor you can elect to deduct items up to $2,500 per item or invoice. Larger equipment and the van have their own rules: tool and van tax deductions.
- Financing: SBA microloans can cover tools and equipment: SBA microloans for a mobile mechanic startup.
- Insure it: a van full of tools is a theft target: tools & equipment insurance.
- Recover it in your rate: add your annual tool spend to overhead in the labor rate & break-even calculator. The job quote & profit calculator then shows whether each job covers it.
