Wheel Bearing and CV Axle Replacement: What to Charge (2026)
Updated 2026-10-17. Sources are listed at the end.
A humming wheel bearing and a clicking CV axle are two of the most common “noise when I drive” calls. Both can usually be done without a lift, but the price depends on one question you need to answer before you quote: bolt-on hub, or press-in bearing?
2026 national price ranges
From RepairPal’s national estimates (updated Sept. 3, 2026; exclude taxes and fees; not adjusted for location):
| Job | Total | Labor | Parts | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wheel bearing replacement | $346–$504 | $226–$331 | $121–$172 | RepairPal |
| CV axle replacement | $1,283–$1,381 | $208–$306 | $1,075–$1,076 | RepairPal |
The CV axle parts figure is a national average that includes expensive vehicles. Aftermarket axles for common cars often cost far less, so quote the part by VIN. RepairPal recommends new axles over rebuilt ones.
Tell the noises apart before you quote
- Wheel bearing: a hum or growl that rises with speed and often changes when the car turns. Check for play and roughness with the wheel off the ground.
- CV joint: clicking on tight turns under power (outer joint), or a clunk or shudder on acceleration (inner joint). A torn boot slinging grease is the early warning.
If the diagnosis takes a road test and a lift-off check, it’s billable time. See how to set a diagnostic fee.
Bolt-on vs press-in changes the job
- Bolt-on hub assembly: a straightforward mobile job. Price it from the book time.
- Press-in bearing: needs a press or an on-car bearing tool. Without the tool, either quote the knuckle removal plus a machine-shop sublet, or pass on the job. Don’t guess the time.
Check the service information for the exact procedure and torque values. On some vehicles the axle nut or hub bolts are single-use; the service information says which. See OEM service information access.
Quote it
Quote = book hours × your labor rate + parts × (1 + markup) + trip fee
Example: a bolt-on front hub at 1.3 book hours and $95/hr = $123.50 labor; the hub costs you $95 × 1.40 = $133.00. Total $256.50 before tax and trip fee. Use your own rate from the labor rate & break-even calculator.
Pairs? Unlike struts, bearings and axles don’t have to be replaced in pairs. If the other side is noisy too, quote it as a separate, optional line. Don’t add it silently.
