Oxygen Sensor Replacement: How Much to Charge (2026 Pricing for Mobile Mechanics)
Updated 2026-10-17. Sources are listed at the end.
An O2 sensor job is short, mostly parts, and almost always starts with a check-engine light. That makes it a good mobile job. The scan tool tells you where to look, and the work is usually a sensor socket and some patience.
National price range (2026)
| Total | Labor | Parts | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oxygen sensor replacement | $440-$523 | $93-$136 | $347-$387 |

Confirm the sensor before you sell it
RepairPal notes that sensors are “arranged in banks” and that a scan tool identifies the sensor that isn’t working (RepairPal). In practice, a code tells you which circuit or sensor position to check, not that the part is bad. Wiring, exhaust leaks and fueling problems can all set O2 codes. Charge a diagnostic fee for the testing, and put the bank and sensor position (e.g., “Bank 1 Sensor 1, upstream”) on the estimate so there’s no question about which part you replaced.

Quoting the hard ones
- Seized sensors. RepairPal says removal often needs “an oxyacetylene or propane torch.” Heat near fuel and undercoating is a risk in a customer’s driveway. Decide in advance whether you’ll use heat on site. If not, quote a possible reschedule or a shop referral for a sensor that won’t come out.
- Access. Most jobs need the vehicle lifted and safely supported. Rear-bank sensors on some V-engines are much harder to reach. Quote extra time where the service information shows a tough path.
- Damaged threads. If a thread repair might be needed, say so on the estimate as a possible extra, and get approval before doing it. Your state’s estimate rules apply; see estimate & invoice requirements.
Parts quality
RepairPal recommends “high-quality OEM oxygen sensors as opposed to cheaper replacements that may not be recognized by a vehicle’s computer.” A comeback on a cheap sensor costs you a second trip. If you offer a lower-priced aftermarket option, write which brand you used and your parts and labor warranty on the invoice.
Worked example
Take a $165 upstream sensor (your cost), 1.0 billed hour, and a $35 trip fee. Use the job quote & profit calculator to compare matrix markup with a flat percentage, and check what the job pays per hour once drive time is counted. On a one-hour job, drive time is often the biggest cost. Pricing it is covered in the trip fee calculator.
