Control arms are a good-paying suspension job that many mobile techs can do on site. There’s one catch: the car usually needs an alignment afterward, and an alignment needs a machine. Build that into the quote from the start.

National price ranges (2026)

How the job is diagnosed and done

RepairPal says a worn control arm may show up on a test drive, in a bounce test, or during an alignment, “since the control arm determines the position and angle of the wheel.” Replacing a lower arm means lifting and supporting the vehicle, removing the wheel, and disconnecting the arm from the lower ball joint and from the frame or body (RepairPal).

Two things change your labor time:

The alignment: three honest options

You’ve changed wheel position, so the customer needs an alignment. Pick one approach and put it in writing:

  1. Partner shop. Arrange the alignment with a local tire or alignment shop and tell the customer up front it’s a separate stop and charge. Some mobile techs negotiate a referral rate.
  2. Include it. Sublet the alignment and put it on your invoice. Check your state’s rules on sublet work. In Florida, for example, sublet labor on a repair invoice with parts is taxable (see the Florida guide).
  3. Customer arranges it. Note on the invoice that an alignment is required and wasn’t performed. That protects you if the tires wear unevenly later.

Don’t skip this step quietly. Uneven tire wear after a suspension job is a common complaint and review problem. See how to get more reviews for the reputation side.

Safety

RepairPal is blunt: the vehicle must be “safely lifted and supported with a jack and jack stands. Failure to do so in a safe manner can result in serious injury or death.” On soft or sloped surfaces, reschedule or move the car. The strut and shock guide covers spring hazards on related front-end work.

Worked example

Take a $240 lower arm with ball joint (your cost), 1.8 billed hours, and a $35 trip fee, plus a sublet alignment at what your partner shop charges you. Enter the alignment as a part line with your markup, or as a flat line at cost, in the job quote & profit calculator.
