How Much to Charge for a Fuel Pump or Fuel Filter Replacement (Mobile Mechanic Pricing, 2026)
Updated 2026-10-17. Sources are listed at the end.
Fuel pumps are a high-ticket no-start job, but they’re also a common misdiagnosis. A bad relay, a clogged filter, or a wiring fault can look identical. Price the test first and the pump second.
National price ranges (2026)
| Job | Total | Labor | Parts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel pump replacement | $1,344-$1,513 | $241-$353 | $1,104-$1,160 |
| Fuel filter replacement | $258-$322 | $132-$194 | $126-$128 |
Source: RepairPal estimates, last updated Sept. 3, 2026 (fuel pump; fuel filter). The ranges exclude taxes and fees and don’t reflect your local market. RepairPal’s vehicle examples run from about $1,253-$1,422 (Silverado 1500) to $1,532-$1,654 (Camry) for a pump. Parts are most of the ticket, so your parts markup matters more here than on most jobs.
Diagnose before you quote the pump
RepairPal’s diagnostic sequence (fuel pump):
- Check fuel pressure at the rail while cranking.
- If pressure is low or zero, check the pump’s electrical circuit: voltage, connections, relay.
- If the pump runs but pressure or volume is low, check the fuel filter and the pump’s condition.
It also warns that “a clogged fuel filter or bad circuit can cause identical symptoms.” Charge this as a diagnostic fee before parts. See how to set a mobile diagnostic fee. Selling a $1,100 pump that doesn’t fix the car is the fastest way to a refund and a bad review.
Quote by access, not just “fuel pump”
- Access panel under the rear seat or trunk floor: the straightforward case. RepairPal notes in-tank pumps “usually” have an access cover.
- No access panel (tank drop): you’ll need to drain the fuel and support and lower the tank. Quote more hours, and decide whether you can do it safely where the car is parked.
- External (in-line) pump: disconnect the lines and swap the pump. Usually the shortest job.
- Add-ons RepairPal recommends doing at the same time: the fuel filter and in-tank screen, and on vehicles where it’s known to fail, the fuel pump relay. List them as separate lines so the customer can see and approve each.
Is this a driveway job?
RepairPal calls fuel work “dangerous” because of fire risk. It advises disconnecting the battery first and checking for leaks and fuel odor afterward. A car with a fuel smell should not be parked “inside your house or under a covered structure” (RepairPal). For a mobile tech, that means:
- Work outdoors, away from ignition sources, with a fire extinguisher at hand. Don’t drop a tank in a closed garage.
- Bring approved containers for drained fuel, and plan how you’ll dispose of or return it.
- If the tank has to come down and the site isn’t safe, a tow to a shop is the professional answer. Price it that way.
- Check that your insurance covers fuel-system work at customer sites. See mobile mechanic insurance types.
Worked example
Take a $560 pump (your cost), a $38 filter, 2.5 billed hours at $95, and a $35 trip fee. Put it into the job quote & profit calculator to see the customer total and your real hourly after card fees and drive time. On parts this expensive, a matrix tier of 30-40% (your choice) moves the total by hundreds of dollars, so set the tiers deliberately. The labor rate calculator tells you what $/hr you need.
